Anytime that anyone asks me about a good restaurant here in Ocala the first thing I ask them is: "Do you want home cooked food that you think just came off from your stove?" if they say yes then I always send them to your restaurant because I cannot think of another place that serves real turkey and not processed, and that goes for everything else that I have had there. I thought that I would be disappointed in the food when it was sold to the new owner, but the food is every bit as good as it was originally. Just keep up the good work. I also want to comment on the amount of food that you get and the reasonable prices so that a lot of people who are on a tight budget can afford to come out to eat there. I also want to thank you for being open for the Holidays as there are so many of us that are by ourselves and do not want to fix a meal at home for one or two. Please be open for Easter also, I like the idea of you just having a menu that fits the Holiday so that you can keep your prices down. You are certainly a asset to Ocala! Betsy_clarke2000@yahoo.com yours Betsy Clarke Pine Run

Reply:  Thank you so much for your comments, It really means alot to us. We are glad to know that you enjoyed the food just as much with us as with the previous owner.  And thank you for spreading the word. Thank you Betsy!  Thanks, from Henry & Amy

Thank you for the excellent menu and service on Christmas day. The manner in which the reservations were handled and executed was commendable with little or no waiting. The food servers and preparers performed exceptionally well also.

Reply:  That you so much for your comments we definitely appreciate the feedback from our customers. We hope to continue the new tradition of being open on the holidays with home cooked holiday meals!! Thank you, Henry & Amy

My dear mother-in-law lives in Top-Of-The-World and whenever I am visiting her (from VA) I can't WAIT to come to your restaurant! I've lived in 5 states and have been blessed to travel a lot and I can say that, hands down, your establishment is by far in my top 3 favorite restaurants! I love absolutely everything I have ever eaten there, the warm & friendly atmosphere, your dear mother-in-law (what a lovely gem she is) and the lovely songs I have been privileged to hear you sing! My husband & I will be in Ocala in a few weeks and I'm already planning to have lunch AND dinner at The Mason Jar many times!! My husband & I hope to move to Ocala in the near future and I will certainly become one of your best customers!! May God continue to bless you and your wonderful staff. Donna Pratt SW Virginia

We were introduced to the Mason Jar in early November, and have become addicted to its atmosphere, cooking and all the very warm, friendly people who own and those who work there!! No one makes desserts like the lady who owns Mason Jar!!! So, Having said this, I would suggest you stop by sometime for lunch or dinner, and get hooked like we did!!! Sincerely, Joyce & Walt Rose, Ocala.

SOMEONE ASKED ME A FEW DAYS AGO WHAT WAS MY FAVORITE RESTAURANT IN TOWN. I CAUGHT MYSELF SAYING, WITHOUT HESITATION, "THE MASON JAR". I HAVE BEEN VISITING YOUR ESTABLISHMENT FOR TWO YEARS. SOME PEOPLE SAY THEY HAVE COMFORT FOODS. WHEN THEIR DAY IS NOT GOING WELL THEY ARE COMFORTED BY CERTAIN FOODS. ME TOO. (YOUR MAC AND CHEESE SHOULD BE NAMED AFTER ME-OK AND EVERYTHING ELSE TOO.) BUT WHAT HELPS COMFORT ME EVEN MORE THAN THE FOOD IS THE WELCOME I ALWAYS RECEIVED AND THE PLEASANTNESS OF EACH AND EVERY PERSON IN THE RESTAURANT (RIGHT DOWN TO BABY EMMA). SOME TIMES I COME ALONE, BUT I ENJOY BRINGING MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY AS A TREAT. AND IT HAS BEEN TERRIFIC TO TREAT MY CLIENTS AS WELL. THANK YOU ALL FOR THE WONDERFUL FOOD, THE PLEASANT ATMOSPHERE AND GIVING ME A NEW (OK NOT SO NEW-2 YEARS). FAVORITE PLACE. I LOVE FEELING AT HOME. DEBBIE WILLEY, EXIT REALTY EQUESTRIAN HILLS. Hi Lightner family. I am visiting your website from Winchester Kentucky. My mother and I, Linda Ballard Wiseman, are opening a restaurant soon here in Winchester. I was visiting a friend at Roberts Real Estate today and Zella Rosenthal insisted that I should visit your site to see how well you guys are doing in the restaurant business. From the looks of things all is going wonderful for you guys and we would love to visit your place if we ever are down that way. We will be serving southern cooking also buffet style so if you come home to visit please come see us. Thumbs up on your website. It was very interesting to read about your family. We LOVE your restaurant. Whenever we are in the west side of Ocala, you will find us dining there. One comment. I looked at your site, ( My Recipes) and it cannot be opened. Just loved the scalloped-pineapple, and wanted to make it for a pot luck. What happened to this site?

The site is still up and working. I just checked it and it opened fine. You might try this link: http://wave.prohosting.com/srecipes/index.htm. The scalloped pineapple recipe isn't on there yet, but I will put it here for you on Tuesday the 5th.

Scalloped Pineapple

This scalloped pineapple casserole is a wonderful accompaniment to ham or pork.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs, beaten
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 4 cups white bread cubes
  • 1 can (20 ounces) crushed pineapple
  • 1 t vanilla

PREPARATION:

Cream together butter, sugar, and eggs. Stir in remaining ingredients and blend well. Place in a buttered 11x7-inch casserole; bake at 375° for 15 minutes, then at 350° for about 50 to 60 minutes.
Serves 6 to 8.

I can't begin to tell you how much I enjoy being in your restaurant. Blue, being a restful color, calms me in moments and all stress is gone. Now I can get down to the wonderful task of selecting what I will have to eat. Not always an easy decision, for sure. But...since I like just about anything served, it really doesn't make much difference what I order, does it? I also want to let you know how confident I feel bringing someone with me who's never been in for your treats. About the biggest problem I always have, is what to eat for dessert! Yummm. Thank you for bringing true Southern food, comfort and service to Ocala. Respectfully, Fran Tilton Pine Run Resident

Sherrie,

All I wanted to do for my birthday last Sunday (11/5) was to have dinner with my good friends at my favorite restaurant, The Mason Jar.

It is such a lovely atmosphere with lovely people and some of the best food that I have ever had.  I expected to have a nice evening enjoying my favorite dish, the potato crusted grouper with the world’s best green beans; but what I got was so much more. When you came out and sang “In the Garden” to another guest, it really touched my heart. (By the way, you have a beautiful voice). And you even topped that by making me a special desert because I am very lactose intolerant. That was no ordinary smore, it was a Super Smore!!!!!!   Thank you so much for making my birthday so special! Not only are you a superb and talented chef, but you and Nana and all the staff are some of the most pleasant people I have ever met. You helped make my day extra special.

Thank You and God Bless!

The food was just out of this world - what we had and we had a few samples of several things there as we told our waitress it was our first time. She brought us 4 o r5 different things to taste. I just was amazed at how nice you all were to us and how great the food was. It was so homey inside. We cant wait to come back and eat again soon. Thanks so much...Dennis and Pam

It was so nice to find this website.  I wish you the best luck ever with your restaurant.  I do know what it means to have a love for cooking and old recipes.  I have enjoyed reading cookbooks and trying many things I even did catering here in Winchester for 3 years but it got to be more than I could handle by myself.

Dear Ones, We are in California. My mom died on Tuesday 6-6-06 and we buried her on Monday (6-12-06). We are staying here to take care of things a bit. We will be returning in late July and then again in September when we dedicate the library in the Education Wing of St. James' Cathedral in Mom's memory. We will have a blessing of the teddy bears, the blessing of the library, and a reception to follow. I am organizing it as we speak! Dave has been sick--the pollution here really got to him; took him to a walk-in clinic today and that is what the doctor told him caused the problem; he has a bad case of sinusitis and a bad case of bronchitis. He is sleeping a lot and not eating very well. We miss you and we think of you all the time. Hope that Pops and Nana are doing okay. Our love to all---Dave and Cathy

Since we have moved to OTOW last year, we have thoroughly enjoyed each and every meal we have had at The Mason Jar. We cannot sing your praises enough.

Everytime we walk into your restaurant, we feel we are "at home." Each and every employee has made us feel welcome and comfortable. As far as the menu is concerned, we have yet to find better tasting food in all of Ocala. We are never disappointed. Last week we enjoyed grouper with the most delicious tarter sauce we have ever tasted. Would it be possible to get this recipe?

Again, we are delighted to have found this wonderful restaurant.

We visited friends in Ocala recently and enjoyed a delicious, homemade Sunday lunch at The Mason Jar. Loved the sides - especially the Sweet Onion Corn-bake - have perused the site looking for the recipe but could not find it. Back here in cold Minnesota we are hungry for that and also the Tuxedo Cake (stopped in on the way to airport and got some to go!). It is divine and one of the few desserts we have eaten that we could say is "to die for". When we get back to Florida The Mason Jar will definitely be at the top of our list of great places to eat. We tell everyone about it! Dale, Tonia & Amber

Sherrie: I can't begin to tell you how much three of us enjoyed three of your best deserts ever at lunch yesterday. The bread pudding, Irish whiskey cake, and Bailey's blueberry mousse were all exceptional (with the bread pudding getting our unanimous consensus of being the best of the trio).

Next year, please have corn beef brisket rather than sliced corn beef. We did feel the sliced corn beef was intended to be on sandwiches and not served as a meat entree. On the other hand, the boxty (I think boxty is the preferred spelling rather than boxdy) was a delight. Please offer those potato cakes more often.

Do you have a recipe for white cake with white frosting? Love the site and the restaurant! TIA

Sure do have a recipe for you, Tia. Here is my Aunt Hazel Gentry's recipe for white cake. I always baked this one for my daughter, Mary's, birthday. Sherrie

White Cake-Hazel Gentry's

Mix for 2 min: 2 ½ c plain White Lily flour, 1 2/3 c sugar,

2/3 c butter ,¾  c milk and 1 t salt.

Add:  4 ½  t baking powder, ½ c milk and 1 t vanilla.

1-30-06 We read about your restaurant in the Star Banner and decided to visit you this past Sunday. Needless to say, everything the reporter had to say was absolutely the truth. There were 4 of us and everyone enjoyed their meal very much. Everything we ordered was delicious and cooked just right. Desserts were delicious too. Believe me, we will be back. Keep up the good work. 4 Happy Customers, Charlie, Helen, Lou and Sophia

I was told that I could get the recipe for the cream of pinto soup on your website, but I haven't been able to find it. Could you please help me.

I sure can help you. Some of the recipes are too new to be on the website yet. Here is the recipe for the Cream of Pinto Bean Soup. Thanks for inquiring, Sherrie

Cream of Pinto Bean Soup

Sauté 1 stick of butter and 1 chopped purple onion.

Add cumin or chili peppers and salt if desired.

Add 1 #10 can pinto beans

Heat all together.

Puree and add 2 c cream as you finish

Return to pot and return to simmer.

Top with salsa and dollop of sour cream.

After numerous recommendations, finally visited the "Mason Jar" and experienced one of the most enjoyable eating ventures since our move to Ocala. The atmosphere is lovely, the menu is incredible and above all, the staff was like family. I think we found the crown jewel of Southwest Ocala. Looking forward to our next visit...

My daughter and I have visited your place three times this week and each visit was most enjoyable. The atmosphere, service and food were great. We look forward to future visits. By way of suggestion, I would like to see you offer a cup of soup so that one might have a soup and sandwich. Offering only a bowl is wasteful as well as expensive when one only wants a small portion along with something else, Wish you great success,........Ron

Good Afternoon, I just stopped in and had lunch. One of the ladies at the Freedom library told me about the "Mason Jar". I had Shepherd's Pie for lunch and I am quite full. I really wanted sweet tea for lunch since it is a "Southern" favorite. The man across from me wanted the same and seemed unhappy not to get it. The waitress asked if I wanted the Signature Fruited tea and I tried it. It was good, but I still longed for my favorite tea. You could make one with peaches...that would be yummy. I want to invite my husband for dinner some time soon. I hope that you continue to have guests like today. Not too many, no waiting ~ good portions ~ friendly staff. Thanks, Kathleen of Ocala

One suggestion, it would be nice to be able to plan a few days ahead. Could you please post your menu for a few days "forward"?  Are you going to expand your menu. looks like choices are very limited

Our menu changes every day. We have limited our entrees to three for a very good reason. We want to make the three things we offer daily as good as they can possibly be. We have a limited space in our kitchen so we want to maximize our efficiency. We hope our food tastes like what you remember as the best of what you have ever had at home. Our menus will be posted daily, and we sincerely hope that if you don't see something you like today that maybe you will find in listed tomorrow. We are also open to any requests and suggestions our patrons may want to share.

Thanks for the inquiry,

Sherrie

Congratulations on your grand opening. Hope you are a real success. As for the catfish rolled in flour, that doesn't sound very good. Of course, being from Kentucky, I have always eaten any kind of fish rolled in cornmeal and it is delicious. Love your website and I recognize a lot of the people. Who knows, you may use one of my recipes sometime and I would be honored. Love, Aunt Correane and Uncle Bud

The fried chicken was not to my liking but it's to be expected that some items will not satisfy everyone. Loved the orange and the chocolate cake.  My wife and I noticed you were having cat fish on Friday so we gave it a try. Sorry to say we were very disappointed. I would never have thought the fish would be covered with corn meal. My grandmother was from Lexington and she never made cat fish with corn meal. A very light flour covering would have been fine. I hope you don't use corn meal on fried chicken, that would really be a shame. I'm sorry, but it will be awhile before taking another chance at your place.

Dear Visitors with Lexington Grandmother,

We are so sorry that you did not like the cornmeal batter on our catfish. I am from the mountains of Kentucky and my grandmothers and my mom all fried their catfish in cornmeal. If you did not like the cornmeal batter, we would have been more than happy to batter your catfish in flour. We hope that the next time you visit, you will  let us know if anything does not please you. We will do our very best to make your visit a pleasant family homecoming. Hope you decide to try us again on catfish day and please be sure to tell us you like your fish battered with a flour mixture. We will try to make up for your unpleasant first visit.
